The Story :
The word “mentha” comes from Mintha, the Greek name of a nymph with whom Hades, god of hell, fell in love. Persephone, his wife, furious with jealousy, threw Mintha to the ground, trampled her and turned her into a plant. The nymph Mintha thus reduced to the state of a plant had only its perfume to seduce.
Its use dates back to very ancient times: peppermint leaves have been found in Egyptian pyramids dating back to the first millennium BC. This widely used medicinal plant was used in antiquity to perfume baths.
Peppermint “Mitcham”, from the city of the same name near London, was a great success and was later extended to the rest of the world.
The Romans incorporated it into their wine and sauce. Their wives chewed a paste containing mint and honey to mask the smell of the wine they drank in secret, for the law punished with death those who used a drink reserved for men and gods.
It became popular in Europe in the 18th century. Beyond its multiple virtues, mint has been adopted by most civilizations as a herbal remedy or as a component of hygiene products.
